Session 3

Session 3: Local Area Network Management / Switch Configuration

The Cisco Networking Academy's third session focuses on LAN Management and Switch Configuration. The switch, another powerful piece of networking hardware, is used like a hub but has many more advantages. Students will learn the function of a switch and how to configure it for network access. Like a router, the switch can provide some security for systems in a local area network at the administrator's discretion. The CNAP has 10 Catalyst 1900-series switches available for students to program and understand the role it plays in networking and network traffic, as well as understand how it can actually benefit a LAN in more ways than one.

Other topics discussed are:
  • Virtual Lans (VLANs)
  • LAN Switching
  • Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (IGRP)
  • Access Control Lists
  • Network Management
Pictorial discription of a VLAN
